one last song

After I finish listening to Bruce Hornsby's Mandolin Rain I'm leaving work for the day. This will put me around 5:15 and I can easily leave then and not feel bad. Actually I can leave earlier without guilt, wait. I can listen to this stupid song any...

Dude, I leave a by 4 PM every day. I get here at 7 AM and don't take a lunch most days, but I just can't stand to stay later than 4. I can go home and see the fam, walk the dogs, walk with Rachel and Luke, etc. I see people every day here who come in before me and work till well after I leave. Why?!?!?? I come in, do my job, and leave. It's very simple, really. I'm not directing this toward you. I know you're not a workaholic. I guess this post just got me thinking about how many people really are!

I try and leave around five though I'm supposed to stay until 5:30 for a full day. I take lunch at my desk many days so it doesn't bother me to leave, I also get in by 9 usually though 8:30 is when I'm supposed to be in. If I could get here earlier so I could leave earlier I would but getting the kids and me ready takes some time in the mornings.

Working in a position that alloows you to leave when the bell rings is awesome. I wish me and my wife had such jobs, but I suppose we each have other perks. For example, she doesn't get over time, but does get comp time. She will go to Disney for a week and get paid for every bit of it and not lose any vacation. I get summers, spring breaks, xmas breaks, etc... so I guess it is just as good or there-bouts.

I would be shot and hung by my toes and beaten by the headmaster while 150 faculty members watch in enjoyment if I left work at a certain time when something needed to get done that day, and I wasn't finished with it (Like what I have to do today, ARG!). I am happy to do it becasue if I go home and it is not done, it stays with me, and I don't like to bring work (or work worries) home with me. I have lots of responsibilities, and I have lots of free time most other times of the year. But if I dropped what I was doing just because "It's 5 o'clock" I think people would not respect me, and I woulnt respect myself.

People at ALFA are like this, but only because they get pay deducted if they work over time or during a lunch. I kid you not, I was talking to someone at ALFA when I did contract work over there. In the middle of my sentence they stopped me and said "Lunch" and walked away.

Some jobs (Like Larissas, not mine)have multiple people doing the same job. But Larissa cant stand it when there is work to be done, and people she works with just leave because it is time to go. When this happens, work is ussually placed in Larissas lap. Since she has the most work ethic there, she ends up doing it. Her mom is the same way as her, and my dad is the same way as me.

But, if we had a kid at home, we'd probably leave on time every day no doubt.

Work may suck sometimes, but God gave us jobs. What I try to do is keep saying in my head on rough days "Glorify God today at work" so work ends up being a blessing than a curse...

I HATE Mowing my yard, but I end up making it look okay because I keep thanking God the entire time for the physical abilitiy to do it, for the yard to mow, for the exercise, etc... it is kind of like getting a spanking and thanking the teacher for the lesson she is teaching you. Ok, bad example...

good grief, that was a long comment... they dont seem long when you type them in this little box... or when you are waiting on tech support to call you back.... :(

You laid out your work philosophy very well, my friend. Mine is similar. You're right that when you have kids you want to be there as much as possible. Of course, I wanted to be there before with Rachel, anyway. In any case, I would feel far more guilty staying extra at work AT ALL over going on home to be with my family. I'm very grateful for my job, but God knows He's first and Rachel is next in line followed closely by Luke. Work falls somewhere down the list after my loved ones. I figure as long as I keep my priorities in order, God will keep me employed. He has thus far and my philosophy has always been the same. Either way, I get the work I'm gonna do done at the end of the day and the rest waits for tomorrow. Heck, tomorrow might never come anyway! But, if it does, the work gets done and I move along.

the lobby at the bank closes at 4:00 and the drive thru is open till 6:00, except for fridays when both the drive thru and lobby are open till 6:00. i usually never get out the door until at least 4:30 or 4:45. which isn't bad i guess. we have certain things we have to get done before we collectively leave, but i'm usually the one who ends up doing most of it. there are days when i have balanced my drawer, but seen the evening drive thru teller was getting backed up, so i'll sign back on and help her out. it would be nice to leave as soon as the doors close, but it's just not possible. i do try to get home as soon as possible though...

My Mom has the same problem and usually doesn't get out until well after 5. It's hard to break away when you have set hours. My job is fairly loose in that as long as someone is here between 9 and 3 (govt hours) then you're good to go. You still have to work your hours and they don't want you coming in any later than 9 or leaving before 3, but other than that, we can adjust as needed. I just want to know how Larissa got approved for comp time?!?!? She works in a different "department" from me and is higher-up on the food chain. I didn't think Anteon approved comp time, though. My boss allows some "unofficial" comp time, but we can't actually bank it and use it later. I did in my last job though. I got overtime, comp time, shift differential, and mission-essential pay. Rarely used overtime or comp time, though. Anyway, I wish I could still get comp time. I still go overtime by 4 - 5 hours every 2 weeks even with leaving at 4 every day!

All I can think of is maybe one of three factors;
-She got it 'grandfathered' in
-She works in an entirely different department than you, and, from what I can tell, all depts there have their own little rules
-(Now I am bragging on her) She is so good at what she does and has been there a VERY long time that they pretty much let her do what she wants... fortunately for the company, she wants to get her work done quickly, and perfectly... and go to Disney world with friends in 2 weeks...

I am sure her first year or first few months at work wasnt like that though, as far as comp time goes...

Yeah, I just remember having all the other stuff at my last job, but this one is so much better, I can't complain! I cannot explain how AWESOME this job is compared to my last one! I am glad Larissa gets comp-time. She deserves it if for no other reason than she was instrumental in me getting this job. I must also give her props for all the good, hard work she does here. The girl might not like it too much, but she knows her stuff and gets the job done well. You are right and justifiably proud of her, sir.

Sipper what do you and Larissa actually do? Are they hiring anyone for a PR or media dept?

JS said...

PR and media... lol. They do contract stuff for their one and only client; The Military. Normally the Air Force. Interesting note, Larissa is on call this week, she got a call from an air force base in Japan last night, but luckily the call only lasted about 5 minutes...

mullinz8 said...

Heaven knows the military could use a little positive media hype

JS said...

The company's home office is in Fairfax, VA... thats where you'd wanna look. But you asked for PR info for Anteon. Anteon is not the military, it just gets hired by the military.

bigsip said...

Wish I could help you there, Mullins. Our office sticks strictly to contracting to the govt (not just military). I, for instance, am working on and analyzing software for the VA Learning Management System. Pretty much, the govt comes up with something it wants to spend its gobs of money on, like software to organize their transportation or supply systems in the miltary (which I think Larissa is sort of working on) and then throws the word out to all the companies like Anteon. Then all the companies bid and the lowest bidder generally wins. If you want PR or broadcasting, the best we have around here are the Montgomery media outlets (i.e. Montgomery Advertiser, TV stations, etc.) Sorry bro...wish AP could take you on...You'd probably be a good fit.

My first week back at work is killing me. One of the supervisors has turned into my boss in that she works all the friggin time. Some days she comes in at 7:30 and doesn't leave until 9! My boss of course loves this since supervisors are salary and get nothing for the extra time. I keep yelling at the super to get her to stop working so much b/c it makes me look bad when I want to work my 8 hours and go home.
