Changing of the pick gaurd

got my new mandolin yesterday. Very loud, very black, and very nice. Next time I see you, Mullins, you may have your Gibson back. Thanks for letting me barrow it. Without your friendship (and your mandolin) I would never know the joys of playing this instrument.

I saw a guy playing the mandoline on TV last night and I thought of you.. A band called Nicklecreek. I've heard a few songs but don't own any of their stuff.
I'm going to buy some guitar strings tonight when I get off work so you folks can help me out in a few days.....

Nicklecreeks mandolin player is truly one f the best alive today... Bill Monroe was the best. I have seen nicklecreek live (in fact, at faulkner, I got to go on their tour bus even.) They do some good ole bluegrass, but alot of their stuff is "newgrass", eitherway, he is good, and I hated their studio albums, but hearing them live was awesome.

Oh yeah. I remember now. They played at Faulkner in place of Jamboree...

I saw Nicklecreek on Austin City Limits, PBS, this weekend and again they are really good. Chris T, the mando player is really an ace. He's played guest spots on a lot of albums because he seems to be one of those new folks who actually know their stuff. The band members have been playing and winning national awards alone and as a group since they were kids. Their studio stuff is fine for what it is but I think they have a really flair for playing live, I would have loved seeing then at FU. Too bad no one snuck in a CD-R to record the show. I hope they can stick together as a band because it really sucks when folks decide they are bigger than the group that have made them what they are.

Jamison I'm glad you got the new mando, I'm sure it's a dream to play.

Btw you need to get some David Grisman in your mandolin library. Bill Monroe was great because he could make that little thing sing but he was also a big limited because he didn't take the mando out of the world of bluegrass root, southern blues and country. BM followed the steps of his ancestry and incorporated highland music from Scotland and Ireland, the origin of real bluegrass, and twanged it out for Americans. The mandolin has its roots in the pandura and lute. Grisman is one of those who have taken the mandolin beyond its popular bluegrass barriers and reclaimed its place in world music. Plus he's got amazing flare and style and can tear that thing up. Of course R. Skaggs and Marty Stewart are pretty good too and both can play in the classic BM style which is classic and uncompromising.

Okay Jiminy Cricket Jamison, you sent me a link to look through your bluegrass pictures in June. I meant to look right away but as you know, my life is a whirlwind of non-stop weird crap. And as you also know, sometimes this can be literal crap. Other times, the crap is represents a description of our life’s daily insanity created by our mad, mad offspring. So somehow “getting back to it” doesn’t always happen. So two months later, I am finally back to it.

As I gaze upon your bluegrass extravaganza, I am bedazzled, gladsome and woozy beyond reasoning with your mandolin abilities/ownership. While my pockets o’ wisdom contain zero tidbits of mandolin knowledge, as a ‘lay-person’, your mandolin seems quite lovely. Sadly, I couldn’t asses your bluegrass band itself because, well, they were just pictures. However, in the pictures you all looked very intent in your bluegrass mission and I feel sure the music was fabulous.

In fact, I was so inspired by your bluegrass photos, I immediately launched from my chair and began to jig.

So perhaps my enthusiasm makes up for my dilatoriness.

P.S. Have you heard of Leftover Salmon? I don’t think they are around anymore but I went to some of their shows years ago. They blended reggae, rock and blue grass. Great shows…oh – and Nicklecreek IS awesome. Tootles…

Men of the cafe... I present to you the one and only "Computer Lady".
Yes, THE computer lady that we mad eup songs about to the tune of Lyle Lovett songs, THE computer lady that we oogled many moons ago before we met our lovely wives...

several months (or was it years) ago I emailed her and told her to check out our blog... this is how the computer lady works; when you have 3 kids and volunteer for everything put in front of you, your responce time is somewhere between 3 months and the life span of your typical star... good ole Heather!

WOOHOO! Computer Lady! Nice to have you on the blog, Heather. Get back to it sooner next time, if you can.

The computer lady, what a treat and on our blog as well! I should have dressed better, I feel like a slouch around such company. Jamison is quite a fine mandolin player in his short time behind the strings. At this rate he'll be jamming all over the country side with the likes of Mark O'Conner, Ricky Skaggs and a host of other world class pickers.
Computer Lady: did I read correctly that you have three kids? Fantastic! My wife (tnmommieof2) and I have two (obviously) boys named Isaac and Caleb, 4 and 16 months respectively. They are a handful less than yours I'm sure but just as much of a joy. Thanks for posting and please don't be a stranger. Stick around and add to our little community as much as you want!

sadly, the computer lady probably won't return until one of her kids graduates college or something... But, it was a cool cameo...
