NO was built in an area 30 ft below sea level...it is the actions of generations past not building on high ground that brought it about...but, it wouldn't be NO if it weren't built in a silly place...

This funny thought occured to me; if Bush had the power to do all that the radical left says he has the power to do (cause 9-11, somehow control the countrys employment level, control the weather, cause hurricanes, burn holes in the ozone, kill thousands, AND, as Cindy Sheehan accuses him of, be the worlds most danerous terrorist while still being the president of the united states and not being able to pronounce long words) then it would almost seem like a compliment to the man, heck, he only has 24 hours in a day like us. I mean, Harvard and Yale are good schools that he went to, but I dont think they were teaching 'weather control 101' yet.

Yes, I know I am over simplifying things, just trying to get a laugh out of you fellas....

LOL...good points all around. People are going to come down on any Pres and assume all of the intents of his heart are constantly on evil. It's just the way people perceive power and fame. I feel the same way about everyone in Hollywood. But, really how much power does any one person in a democracy have? I mean, you'd have to be Castro or Milosevic or Hussein to do the things most people thing the Pres does!

Actually I saw on the news last night that the levies were only built to withstand a Cat. 3 Hurricane because it would "cost too much" to build them stronger.

bigsip said...

I bet they'll make them plenty strong this time! Led Zeppelin had plenty to say about what happens when the levee breaks.

I've got nothing specifically to add to this comment. I haven't yet read the whole article, and it seemed fairly reactionary.

I will comment that I agree with Jamison that partisan politics seems to jump the gun on this type of thing to lay down blame. It's seems like the liberals blame Bush for everything.

I got a hangnail. It must be Bush's fault.

However, when things like this occur there is often someone to blame. Of course no one but God can be "blamed" for the hurricane, but we can look at various factors that may have caused greater damage.

In New Orleans (and why by the way are we annoyingly calling it NO?) the levees breaking have certainly caused a great deal of the flooding. If the contractor built them poorly, we could blame him for some of the flooding. If officials were given information that the dams were faulty, or would not hold up to a type of storm and that type of storm was likely, we can hold them responsible for not doing something.

Say I go to the shop and get new brakes installed. After, while driving down the road, a little girl jumps in front of my vehicle. I slam on the brakes only to find they do not work, killing the girl. Who is to blame? Certainly the girl should not have jumped in front of me, but the shop should have also fixed my brakes.

This is a larger issues, of course, and I don't think we should all point our fingers at our president and blame him fully. However, we should look into accusations like this to make sure no one was negligent.

NONONONONONO...are you annoyed yet, Brew? It's like a postal abbreviation...who wants to type "New Orleans" everytime? Lazy? yes. but, it communicates.

you're exagerating...at least you knew we were talking about New O...we used one abbreviation (acronym, really), not frickin Brewspeak! i understand though, Brew...you are trying to get us prepared for webzining vs blogging and that kind of stuff would be unacceptable on a webzine. I'll try to do better.

Mat Brewster said...

I am exaggerating, and it isn't really a big deal, the NO just kind of annoyed me because it isn't something you would normally see. Like you were trying to be hip or something, but it wasn't really hip.

Whatever.

I know this thread may not be getting as much traffic as some of the newer ones but I’ve gotta add a touch more. The whole article cites various times, different times when Bush was warned that if a direct hit from a hurricane were to make land fall in NO then the whole city would be sacked. When the Army Corps Eng’s said they need the millions to fix it Bush said no thanks I’m going to start a war across the world you guy scan have 3 million of the 36 you asked for. This was in 2001. The whole plan for the ACE was to reinforce the levee’s and install more pumps to displace water that might seep in during a really powerful storm because, as Di stated the levee’s since the day they were built were only built to withstand a cat.3 storm. I know this is my opinion and it’s been stated before but starting the Iraq conflict was ridicules and the money that was removed from the ACE to Iraq was a poor decision. The reason the ACE made the assessment on the levees was because the ACE was commissioned to find the weakest points in America where terrorists could attack. A couple of solid truck bombs or a category 4 or 5 hurricane would flood the city. Also Bush opened up Federal wetlands that acted as a storm buffer against water surges for construction a couple of years ago (according to yesterday’s NPR broadcast) to private construction development. So miles of natural God made storm buffers had been destroyed, oops “developed” all thanks to W. I know that random acts of God are just that and when God says it’s time to take stock of things that IS what’s going to happen. Man had the ability to strengthen those levees and it was considered a back burner project. Nature had created a natural buffer against some storms and they were destroyed both with the blessings of the federal government. W didn’t make the storm but he did nothing, when warned, to help protect against the inevitable be it 1, 10 or 50 years down the road.

I guess it's good that I just got a phone call and I've gotta run because I could rant all day about this crap...

I'm sure this is one of many budget decisions the Bush administration made. Presidents are given literally encyclopedic volumes of information for consideration ad they have to make a call. The Pres has advisors, a cabinet, representatives, etc. that give him the goods on what should be done with funds. I don't think you can blame one person, but he, along with his associates (including Dems, Repubs, and plenty of others) shoulder the blame on this. If the Senate really thought this was important enough at the time, it would have made the budget. Unfortunately, it didn't. This wasn't one man's failure, just like the continuing dictatorships and genocide in the Balkans and Iraq weren't only Clinton's fault. Checks and balances, necessary, but cumbersome.

BTW, I wonder if y'all think the world is changing quickly socially, intellectually, and economically? I really put this here to make this 14 posts...but I might expound upon this in a blog...

I know you wont find this AS FUN as blaming Bush (seems to be the lefts favorite past-time) but the truth hurts...

Can we please keep this less personal?

Who, exactly is the "you" in your comment, Jamison? Is it one of us, or some crazed lefty out in cyberspace?

As for the article I think its pretty deplorable to basically say that we know you are drowning, starving, dying out there, but we're not going to help because we told you so.

What a great freaking government to come to a city and basically tell them if something horrible happens, well screw you because we aint prepared to help.

I realize that they were warned. I realize they had warning to leave. Some people are crippled and couldn't leave, some didn't have transportations but I'm sure many were just stupid and stubborn. But this is no reason to not care if these people die. Which is the message they seem to be spreading.
