Well I may finally do it. I might be my own boss pretty soon. I'll be keeping you guys posted.
I've been talking with an old co-worker , Brad Harrub, and he now has a journal that he's paying $5,000 a month (yes, a 5 with 3 zeros) to have typeset. That includes the company finding the pictures to illustrate the journal. It's 32 pages long and would take about 2 straight weeks per month to complete. I told him I could do it for a flat $3,000 per month. He said, "Hello!" Which is Bradeeze for "keep talking, I'm listening." I could do that and Discovery for $500 per month (2 to 4 days work) and make $42,000 per year before taxes. I would still have over 15 business days per month to do other things, work part time elsewhere, find filler work or other accounts, etc.
It sounds awesome on the surface. I would have to invest about $6,000 to start-up. That includes:
1) A better computer and second monitor
2) Software
3) A used laptop (Jamison you got a price for me yet?)
4) A Tabloid color laser printer
5) A monitor and printer color optimization tool.
In reality investing $6,000 into a start-up business is nothing. I'm really giving this a lot of thought. Your prayers would be appreciated. I'll be calling Brad sometime today to see if we can work out some details.
(And on a side note...Where's the Mullinz video, Jamison?)

That's awesome, man!
Just don't take all of Rachel's work. She's really excited :)
I'm sure there's enough to go around!
Looks like AP, you, and Rachel are all gonna get the best of both worlds though freelancing!
Sip...I don't think this will affect Rach too much. I'm not planning on keeping my eggs all in Brad's and APs basket. So I'm planning on turning down stuff (or over pricing myself) so that they will not rely on me.
That's funny. I didn't see you comment, Sip, until after I added my footnote comment
Yeah, blogger does weird things...go figure!
So Brad is off on his own now? Didn't he used to work at AP? Very cool that he will be able to give you the hookup, man!
Like I said it's only on the table right now. I'll be posting again when I know the full scoop.
Awesome!
Until then, I've already been praying and shall continue!
If you’re going to be finding the images that accompany text are you not going to have to pay usage and licensing fees for the images catalogs out there? Where do you find the pics for things like this?
This sounds really fantastic. Freelance is the way to go especially if the wife has got some fine insurance and all that jazz covered.
I say try it for a few months because you can always look for work on the side.
My only warning would be, and I’m sure you’ll be on top of this anyway, to make the needs, requirements, and fees are established up front before anything else happens.
C.Y.A.
CYA indeed!
The images are payed for by the organization needing the product. I will probably keep an AP credit card for that purpose. Brad has a few "image accounts" at stock photography places that he uses for his journal. He'll just tell me the passwords or i'll bill him if I need to go outside those for images.
For other organizations. I'm planning on charging $35 to $45 per hour with a $25 half-hour minimum. Brad is paying about $75 per hour.
Hey Charles, I've been wondering... does everybody at AP kind of do their own thing on the side? Like Kyle's books and Brad's journal. It's a little confusing to me who does what and what's under the AP umbrella.
Brad is not physically located in Montgomery anymore. He is doing a half-n-half thing with his work and ours. It saves us a little money and allows him to focus on his own mission.
Kyle wanted to publish some things that don't fit AP's mission. So he started Peaceful House Publishing.
I don't thin Eric has anything on the side. Dave has some things that he's published outside of AP for the same reason Kyle does or because he did them before he started w/AP.
Does that help? I'm not sure if you were asking about any of the regular employees like myself and Rob or not.
That's very cool, Sir. Prayers will be said.
I take some pretty mean photos myself. Cut me in on that action and I'll give you a big discount.
thats a low price for start up for real, go for it.
I just spent $900 at the AL dept of surplus auction for a palet of used laptops... I am scared I wont make my money back for them on ebay....
Also, stay close to me this summer communication-wise. I sell off lots of monitors and computer stuff.
I was just curious. It makes sense now.
I'm psyched that you may go out on your own; that's kind of what I was hoping for you. We will say lots of prayers because I know it can be stressful to start your own business!
Do you have any flat-panel monitors, Jamison?
What would one of those run?
I'd love to help you sort through those laptops. I enjoy doing that sort of thing.
i will have flat panel monitors in July... white, 15 inch, and about 4 years old. They will cost you $75 that youll have to pay the school. I dont steal things anymore like i used to, otherwise I'd give you one for free. God (whether you beleive it or not) made me put a stop to that long ago (Corvette fiasco).
Chuck, you can help me sort through all you like, though youd have to do it for free... ill be lucky if I break even...
I showed Sip a fine looking Dell computer last night... "laptop" though i am sure it would crush you if you sat it in your "lap"
We'll talk about it. $75 doesn't sound too bad.
That laptop was crazy! Reminded me of the first cell phones.
chuck, i can upload the mullins movies as soon as someone offers me some webspace...
i'm working on that webspace...are we gonna talk laptop tomorrow?
